New World Freestyle Championship Mountain Boarder Crowned!

A new World Freestyle Championship Mountain Boarder, Renny Myles was crowned at Bugsboarding in Gloucester on Saturday, following a spectacular series of moves, on a somewhat waterlogged racetrack!

The heavens opened for the event but that did nothing to deter the 60 UK and international riders who turned up in a bid to claim their share of the prize money and the coveted accolade of Mountain Board World Freestyle Champion!

That title went to Renny from Nottingham who put on a solid performance in every round, with a 360 at the top of the course, a back flip with grab and tweak and enough speed to hit the last kicker with a big 360 off the last jump. Renny told us: "It was a bit of a brave run really, but I just went down the hill, over the jumps and it all worked out - I didn't plan it really. It feels great to be World Champion and I can't wait to defend the title next year. It was a great event, great international riders and a superb turn out."

Taking second place went to Siberian rider, Pavel Dunaev who gave it everything, despite the conditions, throwing in some impressive back flips to make his mark. Third place went to Ben Tweedie who showed us some seriously sturdy grabs, tweaks and 360s.

The Women's Mountain Board World Freestyle Championship crown went to Jos Kirkman, with Rebecca Frost in second place.

The Masters World Freestyle Championship top podium place went to Jon Burton, Raphael Laroche in second and Josh Gratham in third.

Conditions were about as challenging as they could be with persistent driving rain slowly killing the race course that Bugsboarding and AJ Watkins, Event Organiser, had painstakingly constructed over the past few months. The covers went on; they came off; they were quickly put back on, then they were lifted off for a short time….etc!

The younger riders pulled out the stops to wow the judges and the assembled crowd, vying the new stars of the future on! The Under 18 World Freestyle Champion was awarded to Ben Rye, followed in second place by Joel Treliving and in close third place, Niall Potter-Farrant. The Under 14 World Championship title went to Mick Kirkman for the third year in a row, second place to Sam Frost and third place to a Peter Howles. Massive well done to all the winners!

We caught up with Ian Williams, our Events Manager who explained the tricky course: "The course was designed with more than one route for riders to take. There's the main route down, with a kicker at the top, a big kicker in the middle with an even bigger kicker at the bottom. There's then a quarter pipe at the bottom to complete the course and give the riders optimum opportunities to impress.

"They can also do the 'Land Rover Drop' which is a 14 ft high drop with a Landrover parked underneath. They literally drop off the front of that onto the hill and then pick up another jump. Or they can do the rails off the side.

"For the riders with slightly less experience they don't have to do the really big jumps but a 'hip jump' off the side."

Marking the moves were five judges, many previous world champions themselves: Fat Face Team Rider, Tom Kirkman, Alex Downie, Leon Robbins, Lewis Wilby and Nicky Geerse.

Alex told us what they're looking for: "Trick wise, we're looking at how high they jump; the higher the better, alongside 360 full circles and a variety of grabs. The more spins you do and the more grabs you do get you more points plus we'll be looking for flip tricks with style and a grab. Style is a big factor and landing. You don't get any points for not landing!"

The event started slightly earlier on Saturday to try and make the most of the weather which stayed on our side, pretty much until early evening when heavy downpours set in.

The competitors each got four full runs and from these the top riders were chosen. Ian continues: "We wanted to carry on giving the riders more runs but the conditions became so tricky for the riders with mud slowing the boards. Getting enough speed to actually do the jumps was near impossible so we had to crown the winners from the results we already had.

"This was a pretty difficult call to make but Renny, Pavel and Ben were, without doubt, the best riders on the day despite some phenomenal competition. This has been the best turnout from UK and international riders yet, with Siberia, Japan, Australia, USA, Switzerland, Belgium, Holland and France all represented.

"Despite the rain, the Fat Face Night Air was still a fantastic event and our massive thanks go to Bugboarding, AJ, the riders and spectators for making it such a memorable occasion."

The rain didn't dampen the party spirit which was also assisted by series sponsor, Jagermeister.
