In the Spotlight... North Berwick

June 04, 2018

Let us take you on a whistle-stop tour of our favourite UK holiday destinations. North Berwick is a fantastic seaside town just half an hour from Edinburgh. To find out more, we’ll hand over to Amy, the store manager at FatFace North Berwick

The beautiful beach of North Berwick

North Berwick is perfect. We’ve got a great mix of old-fashioned family fun, gorgeous beaches and brilliant golf courses – plus lovely shops and places to eat. From the putting green to picnics on the beach, there’s something for everyone. Once you’re here you won’t want to leave!

Friendly local shops

Our store is part of North Berwick’s thriving High Street. Come to FatFace for your cosy seaside essentials and a warm welcome. We’ve also got some amazing neighbours who we know you’ll love. A few doors away is Bostock Bakery who make the best cinnamon buns in Scotland and quite possibly the world! On Quality Street, try the award-winning gelato at Alandas or some delicious fish and chips at the North Berwick Fry. Tucked away in a side street behind our store you’ll find Steampunk Coffee. Their coffee is roasted on site and it’s delicious. For a friendly pub with great food, try The Herringbone.

Explore our town beaches

Once you’ve picked up some goodies from the shops in town, you’re just a short stroll from our gorgeous sandy beaches. The harbour divides the beaches in half. One side is West Bay and on the other, Milsey Bay – or East Bay as we locals call it. Everything’s very safe and accessible – there’s a swimming pool built into the rocks on the East side that’s great for children. You can hire beach wheelchairs from the harbour. Stand-up paddle-boarding is really popular on both beaches. Head to the SUPhut to book some lessons and hire all the gear you need!

Birdwatching at the Scottish Seabird Centre

There’s a lot happening up at North Berwick harbour. Not far from the fishing boats and the brightly coloured beach huts, you’ll find the Scottish Seabird Centre. From the comfort of the centre you can use special cameras to view the amazing seabirds on the Firth of Forth islands. The café at the centre has the best views in town, whatever the weather. If you want to get even closer to the birds, catch one of the boat trips out to the islands. Remember to take your hats and cosy jumpers with you, as it does get quite chilly.

Fringe by the Sea and the best seafood in town

The beautiful harbour at North Berwick, with boats moored up waiting to be taken out

For one week in August, the harbour turns into a big venue for Fringe by the Sea – an extension of the Edinburgh Festival. It’s great fun for all the family! While you’re there, try the amazing seafood at the Lobster Shack on the harbour. Everything at this informal street food place is fresh off the boats – the lobster, mussels and mackerel are wonderful. Once they’ve sold out they shut up shop, so make sure you don’t miss out.

Day tripping

It’s tempting to never leave North Berwick, but if you do, there are some great places within easy reach. Seacliff Beach is a hidden gem. When the tide’s out you can clamber over the rocks and see the breathtaking view up to Tantallon Castle – just be careful not to get stuck! The local golf courses are also fantastic – we’ve got North Berwick Golf Club and in nearby Gullane there are three top-class courses. Or for something entirely different, there’s the National Museum of Flight which is great when you fancy a break from the beach.
