In the Spotlight... Mevagissey

May 08, 2018

Let us take you on a whistle-stop tour of our favourite UK holiday destinations. Mevagissey is a pretty little fishing village on the Cornish Riviera. To find out more, we’ll hand over to Grace, the store manager at FatFace Mevagissey…

It’s easy to fall in love with Mevagissey, an old fishing village with a busy working harbour and a friendly, tight-knit community. It’s like living in a pretty postcard and I feel so lucky to call it home. Come to our store for a warm Cornish welcome!

The prettiest harbour

Our store sits right on the harbour and there’s a beautiful view of the sea from our front window. We share it with working fishing boats, kids with crabbing nets and our resident seal. It’s a lovely place to sit, eat and be sociable. For great coffee, I’ll head to She Sells, a cute little café that also does crêpes, galettes and the most amazing ice cream sundaes. For local fish and seafood we head to the Sharksfin, the Harbour Tavern or the King’s Arms. The Fountain Inn does lovely crab sandwiches and the best fish and chips. If you’re there on a Monday night you might be lucky enough to hear the Mevagissey male choir singing a few impromptu sea shanties!

The Cornish Riviera

Walk the coastal paths around Mevagissey and you’ll find cove after sheltered cove. The colours are straight out of a paint box: golden sand, bright blue sea and rolling green countryside. Head out of the village and you’ll soon reach Pentewan, where there’s a big sandy beach, a pub and a tiny harbour. In the opposite direction is Gorran Haven. This unspoilt little village and beach is the most perfect place to swim, paddle and relax to your heart's content. When you get back to Mevagissey, treat yourself to a delicious ice cream from our neighbours at Harbourside Ice Cream.

Secluded coves

Cornwall is busy in the summer, but round here there are always chances to escape the crowds. About a quarter of a mile along the coastal path from Mevagissey you’ll come to Polstreath beach. There are 200 steps down to this little gem of a beach and even on the hottest day in August you can have the whole beach to yourself. The circular walk from Gorran Haven to Dodman Point is also stunning.

Catch the ferry to Fowey

It’s a 40-minute boat trip from Mevagissey across the estuary to Fowey. Here you’ll find lots of pleasure boats, boutiques and restaurants. Wear our Serena Dress with a pretty cardigan and a sun hat for a touch of Cornish Riviera glamour. While you’re in Fowey, walk to the sheltered beach at Readymoney Cove, which is overlooked by the ruins of St Catherine’s Castle.

Tall ships and a Cornish jungle

The Lost Gardens of Heligan are just a couple miles from us. I enjoy walking in the formal gardens, spotting pineapples in the glasshouse and crossing the rope bridges in the jungle. Admire the amazing views over the valley towards Mevagissey and then enjoy some of the home-grown produce at the garden’s Kitchen and Bakery. From here, you’re also very close to the Eden Project. I love their events and activities. You'll never get bored. While you’re out and about, you should also call in to Charlestown. There are often beautiful old tall ships in the harbour and it’s a favourite TV filming location for Poldark.
