In the Spotlight... Lyme Regis

January 25, 2018

Let us take you on a whistle-stop tour of our favourite UK holiday destinations. Lyme Regis, on the Jurassic coast in Dorset, is a seaside town known for its rich history and amazing fossils. To find out more, we’ll hand over to Kayleigh, the store manager at FatFace Lyme Regis…

Escape and discover

Lyme Regis sits right at the heart of the Jurassic Coast, the only natural World Heritage Site in Britain. There’s so much to discover and do – from great food and gorgeous beaches to breath-taking cliffs and fossils.

Walk the famous Cobb

The Cobb is the famous stone pier which shelters the harbour at Lyme Regis. Anyone who’s anyone has walked it – from Jane Austen to the cast of the French Lieutenant’s Woman. The views are amazing. It’s wonderful in the morning light, and if you’re up bright and early on your holidays then the cooked breakfasts at The Galley are delicious.

Plenty of beaches

You’re never far from a beach in Lyme Regis. The main town beaches are sheltered and easy to get to. We also love Back Beach, a pebbly paradise that’s perfect for dog walking and fossil hunting all year round. Monmouth Beach has giant ammonite-covered rocks. Just remember to be cautious of the changing tides and the crumbling cliffs. Pop in to our store and we’ll be happy to point you in the right direction.

Fossils galore

The Jurassic Coast is heaven for fossil hunters. Start by visiting Lyme Regis Museum and learn more about the local geology and the nineteenth century fossil hunter, Mary Anning. Join one of the museum’s fossil hunts on the nearby beaches – or try your luck at Charmouth beach. You don’t need to be an expert to have a go. All you need is a little patience and

Fun on the water

Lyme Regis is calm and sheltered so it’s perfect for swimming. I love an early morning dip, or last thing at night. Kayaking, paddle boarding and boat trips are also a great way to enjoy the coast. Mackerel fishing trips are particularly popular, and this summer the National Trust are running Jurassic Coast cruises starting in Lyme Regis.

Beach to bar

A classic pair of cropped chinos and a pretty top are the perfect outfit to take you from day to evening in Lyme Regis. There are so many lovely pubs, bars and restaurants to choose between – from the Mark Hix Oyster and Fish House to the simplicity of some good old Dorset fish and chips. And don’t forget to try some delicious gelato at Frank and Bean while you’re here.

Getting out of town

If spectacular views are what you’re after then head to the Golden Cap – the highest point on the south coast. For peace and quiet, try the pretty walk along the river from Lyme Regis to Uplyme. To see more of the stunning Jurassic Coast, hop on a bus eastwards to Lulworth Cove and the famous Durdle Door – an amazing natural limestone arch.

Carnival time

Each August we celebrate everything that’s great about Lyme Regis. First up is Lifeboat Week (28 July – 3 August), followed by the fun-packed carnival (4 – 12 August) with its spectacular firework display on the Cobb. Keep your eyes peeled for the specially decorated wooden duck in our shop window – it’s a quirky tradition which we just love!
