Things to do in Fort William

May 19, 2018

Let us take you on a whistle-stop tour of our favourite UK holiday destinations. Fort William, in the West Highlands, is the outdoor capital of the UK. To find out more, we’ll hand over to Rachel, the store manager at FatFace Fort William

Fort William is the gateway to the Highlands, and we’re right next to Ben Nevis, the highest peak in the UK. If you’re looking for adventure and dramatic wild beauty, you’ve come to the right place. We’ve got hillwalking, climbing, mountain biking and skiing right on our doorstep.

Exploring the town and loch

You can expect a warm Highland welcome in Fort William. Our store is on the High Street, which is a short walk away from the shores of Loch Linnhe. The Crannog restaurant runs its own boat tours. Step aboard and enjoy the amazing views of Ben Nevis and our local wildlife and seals. For another great view across to the Ben, head to the ruins of Old Inverlochy Castle on the edge of town.

Glen Nevis and the mighty Ben

Ben Nevis is popular, but it’s a tough climb. If you’re unsure, there are lots of trained guides who can help you. A less busy but equally rewarding hill walk is Stob Bàn. It’s a steep climb, but the paths are good. The low-level routes in Glen Nevis are also stunning and easier for all abilities. One of the best is the walk to Steall Falls. Whatever you do, it’s incredibly important to respect the landscape and be prepared. I’ve lived here nearly all my life and I still always check the advice at WalkHighlands before I set off. Don’t forget a cosy jumper and hat!

Mountain bikes, skiing and gondolas

The ski season at Nevis Range Mountain Experience lasts from December to April, but there’s plenty to do during the rest of the year. Take a trip on the UK’s only mountain gondola, which gives you a shortcut up Aonach Mòr where the views are breathtaking. The Mountain Bike World Cup takes place at Nevis Range and there are great routes for all abilities. Excitingly, you can even take your bike up on the back of the gondolas to reach the highest track! If you’ve got any energy left, take a trip to the Tree Adventure at Leanachan Forest or try some white water rafting at the River Garry.

Amazing local food and drink

After all that fresh air, head back to the comfort of Fort William and enjoy some of our cosy pubs and restaurants. Try some local seafood at the Crannog or the relaxed dining at Garrison West. For a quick bite to eat, we love Delicraft and the vegan Wild Cat Café. If you’re after an authentic taste of the Highlands, go to the Grog and Gruel who have a great selection of Scottish beer, whisky and gin – plus traditional music sessions on Friday nights.

Steam trains and the Caledonian Canal

Catch the Jacobite Steam Train from Fort William to Mallaig on the west coast. You’ll see some spectacular scenery on your way and pass over the famous Glenfinnan Viaduct – which featured in the Harry Potter films. For family fun, cycle along the nearby Caledonian Canal. Along the way you’ll see Neptune’s Staircase – an amazing set of nineteenth century locks. Round off your visit to Fort William with a tour and whisky tasting session at the Ben Nevis Distillery. You’ve earnt it!
