In the Spotlight... Burnham Deepdale

January 25, 2018

Let us take you on a whistle-stop tour of our favourite UK holiday destinations. Burnham Deepdale is a great place to begin your adventures along the north Norfolk coast. To find out more, we’ll hand over to Nick, the store manager at FatFace Burnham Deepdale…

A changing landscape

Burnham Deepdale sits on the edge of the salt marshes which lead out to the sea. The whole area is a haven for wildlife, and the magical thing about this part of Norfolk is that the landscape is always changing. As the tides go in and out, a maze of creeks and channels open up. The Norfolk skies are big and blue, and it’s a fascinating place to be.

Explore the area

Brancaster Staithe and Burnham Deepdale are practically the same place – it’s hard to tell where one village finishes and the next begins. A great way to get your bearings is to walk through Brancaster Staithe and up to Barrow Common. There’s a fantastic view, and it really helps you appreciate the area’s subtle beauty. Explore the coast by kayak, or the land by bicycle.

A great place to stay

Our store is in Burnham Deepdale. You’ll find a campsite, a café and useful shops. Brancaster Staithe has a pretty harbour and the National Trust’s Brancaster Activity Centre. During the summer, it becomes a bustling hub for visitors and it’s a great place to start exploring the coast. Start your day with breakfast at the café by the campsite and then stock up on everything for a trip to the beach. You’ll need some simple, comfortable clothes – shorts and linen shirts are my favourites.

The best beaches

Burnham Deepdale is on the marshes, so we don’t have a beach, but you don’t have to go far to find one. The nearest sand is at Brancaster. If you’re lucky you’ll spot kite surfers. A little further east you’ll find the Holkham Estate, with its stunning beach, hidden away behind the pine woods. For seaside fun and another unspoilt beach, head just a little further along to Wells-Next-The-Sea.

Legendary wildlife

The salt marshes and the tidal creeks are a bird lover’s paradise. You could spend a whole day at RSPB Titchwell appreciating the amazing local wildlife. For something more secluded, catch the ferry to Scolt Head Island – a haven for wildlife. While you’re in Norfolk you must also try and see our famous seals. Boat trips run daily from Blakeney, just along the coast from us.

A great reputation for food

Our area has a great reputation for food. Look out for gorgeous mussels and samphire. The White Horse in Brancaster Staithe has beautiful seasonal and locally sourced food. You’ll also find the Jolly Sailors just down the road from our shop. Everyone’s welcome at this friendly pub, which serves ale from its own micro-brewery, plus delicious seafood and pizza. And of course, you must try the café in Burnham Deepdale.

Go further afield

There’s even more to discover just along the coast. Try Sheringham with its sandy beach and pretty streets, or Cromer with its famous pier. Or, if you want to head inland, then Burnham Market and Holt both have great independent shops and brilliant places to eat. If you’re after a hidden gem, my tip is Holme-Next-The-Sea beach, which has revealed exciting archaeological finds over the years – from the famous Bronze Age seahenge to the less well-known 10,000-year-old wild boar skull discovered by my son!
