The plastic pollution problem and how you can help

October 30, 2018

8 million pieces of plastic pollution end up in the ocean every. single. day. 5,000 bits of plastic that shouldn’t be there are found per mile of beach in the UK. That’s not okay.

Horrifying facts about the state of the UK litter problem on our beaches

It’s been great to see more and more people across the UK getting involved with clearing our beaches of plastic this summer, with events being organised by the likes of The Marine Conservation Society and Surfers Against Sewage proving successful in removing tens of tonnes of litter before it made its way to the ocean.

But the problem isn’t going away. In 2016, 320 million tonnes of plastic were generated, which is set to double by 2034. Each and every one of us can help make a difference by making alternative choices to single-use plastic and recycling everything that can be. But this alone won’t stop plastic pollution reaching the seas and harming marine life.

As the days are getting shorter and we’re spending more time cosying up indoors, our beautiful coastlines still need our love, care and attention to ensure that as little plastic ends up out to sea as possible.

Surfers Against Sewage’s organised autumn cleans have seen over 28,000 volunteers remove 80,000kg of marine plastic pollution from beaches since 2011 and, while these events are fantastic, there are more ways we can all help have a positive impact. As SAS says – think global, act local!

SO, HOW CAN YOU HELP?

First thing’s first – head to the beach!
The beach is not just for summer, so wrap up and head out for a stroll by the sea. At this time of year it’s easier to catch the sunrise and sunsets (even if we are partial to a lie-in) and the beach is a top one viewing spot. Just take a bag or bucket with you and collect any litter you see. We suggest having a good pair of gloves on you, not only to keep you warm but to keep your hands clean and dry while collecting rubbish.

Don’t live near a beach?
Take a trip to a river and hunt for plastic, before it even has a chance to reach the coastline.

Get the little ones involved!
Make it a fun game with a bit of competition to see who can find and pick up the most litter, while teaching the next generation the importance of keeping plastic away from our oceans.
