Best of Bonfire Night

October 30, 2018

Remember, remember the 5th of November… Yep, it’s that time of year! Cosy coats, hot chocolate in flasks and huge firework displays; there’s so much to love about Bonfire Night — and it marks the exciting run up to Christmas, too. It’s quite possibly our favourite time of year, so join us in making the most of the party with these classic traditions.

FIREWORKS, OF COURSE

“Ooh, ahh!”. The familiar sounds of spectators in awe; of course Bonfire Night is all about the fireworks. There are loads of organised firework displays going on up and down the country throughout November, with food, fairground rides and traditional fairground games, so check out what’s happening near you. And make sure you wrap up warm. Bonfire Night marks the start of the cosy season so it’s all about cosy layers — coats, chunky jumpers, hats, scarves and gloves.

TOASTED MARSHMALLOWS

There’s nothing better than warm, gooey, roasted marshmallows that stick to the roof of your mouth. Make the most of the bonfire and the last few embers by cracking open your favourite marshmallows and toasting them over the open fire. Why not embrace the outdoors by using twigs you’ve found from the woods? Whether you go rustic or use wooden skewers, wet them first so they don’t burn.

STICKY TOFFEE APPLES

When you think of Bonfire Night, you think of the toffee apples, right? They’re SO easy to make, so why not give them a go using our delicious recipe below.

Ingredients:

8 red apples
400g caster sugar
1 tsp vinegar
4 tbsp golden syrup
Lollipop stick

1. Put your apples in a bowl with boiling water to remove any waxy residue. Dry them, pull off the stalks and carefully push a lollipop stick into each one.

2. In a saucepan over a medium heat, add the sugar to 100ml water and cook until it dissolves. Stir in the vinegar and golden syrup. Boil to 150C, or until a small amount of syrup dropped into cold water forms hard, brittle threads.

3. Dip the apples into your syrup (holding them by the stick), turning regularly so they’re evenly coated. Pop them on a lightly greased baking tray to harden.

MAKE YOUR OWN GUY

Get creative this Bonfire Night and make your own Guy! It’s pretty easy to do — all you need is an old feather pillow, string, stuffing (like bedding or newspaper) and old clothes that are no good for the charity shop….

Step 1: Dress your pillow with your chosen top. Stuff the sleeves with your stuffing and tie them up with string.

Step 2: Grab some bottoms, dress the pillow and stuff the legs. Tie these up too.

Step 3: Now it’s time for the head. There are so many ways you can do this. You could use an old pillow case and stuff it, papier-mâché a balloon or use an old ball of some kind. Draw on some features and attach the head using a long piece of string, tying it under the clothes to the body. Finish it off with a wig or hat and you have your very own Guy Fawkes!
