Despite gusting winds of 60mph and driving rain, we weren’t going to disappoint nearly 100 sailors who had made the pilgrimage to Plymouth from all over the UK, including Scotland, to take part in the inaugural event.
We’re not ones to be outdone by anything really, including the Great British weather! It wasn’t quite the event we were expecting for our first Fat Face Night Sail but we can’t do anything about the weather. However, we can truly say that the event was a massive success and we’re chomping at the bit to bring these sailors back for a rematch next year
After conditions made it impossible to run a sailing event, we decided to use the facilities at Mountbatten Centre to run a massive inter team championship.
With seven different dinghy sailing classes making up teams, heats got underway. A number of land based challenges tested the teams to the max, despite drenching rain pouring onto the competitors.
If the competitors were not wet enough and despite the wind building, the teams took to the water as £1,000 of prize money was still up for grabs. With Mountbatten Centre’s safety teams keeping a very close eye on proceedings, the teams took to play boats before throwing themselves into the water for a race around the buoy. The finals consisted of a downwind sail on the play boats, using our giant Fat Face flags for sails, paddling round the buoy before an upwind slog to paddle back to the finish line.
We caught up with Will Blair, our very own marketing manager, who told us: “Watching the teams in driving rain, competing to the max was a sight for sore eyes and represents the phenomenal British spirit which kicks in and makes the most of situations in the worst of situations.
“We had competitors travelling from north of Glasgow to make it to the event so to call it a day because of the weather was not an option for us. At Fat Face we’re all about ‘Life is Out There’ and we truly lived up to our name! There was full on competition between the teams the whole afternoon/ evening finishing with a huge party and live band at The Mounbatten Centre.”
The party carried on into the wee small hours and we closed the chapter on another awesome Fat Face Night Series event!
