The dates for this year's legendary Fat Face Night Surf are confirmed as 27-29th June and we'll be back at Lusty Glaze Beach in Newquay for the eighth year!
Part of the UKPSA (UK Pro Surf Association) Surf Tour, competitors and spectators alike can be sure to be part of another awesome weekend of top surfing, a chilled environment, fireworks and the best parties, long into the night!
Last year we had 150 competitors at the event - with Pros riding alongside the amateurs - and spectators into their thousands. We had really limited swell which tested the competitors to the absolute max but it was still an awesome spectacle to watch and fiercely contested.
However, it was Australia's Jarrad Sullivan who claimed the Men's Night Surf Open Title 2007, just stealing it from local boy, Russ Winter! Our very own Fat Face Team Rider, Chris Thomson won the Longboard competition and Holly Donnelly won the women's final. There was also a hotly contested Grommits Comp with Harry Timson, maintaining his title as U12 winner and Gwen Spurlock taking the trophy home in the U16 girl's event.
We caught up for a chat with Ian Williams, our Events Manager and main man on the ground who told us a bit more about the comp: "The Fat Face Night Surf is one of the most testing events on the UKPSA tour due to the major lack of ability to see the waves coming in. Night surfing relies on natural ability to react to the flow and possible changes in direction of any given wave let alone the off putting shadows thrown by the lights."
There are huge floodlights which enable spectators to see the surfers battling it out but for the surfers there are, more often than not, sheets of darkness where they literally have to feel their way through the waves. Surfing skill (and quite a bit of luck!) are absolutely key!
Working with the UKPSA is key to the success of the event and Dave Reed, Contest Director from the association gave us his thoughts on the event: "The event gets bigger and bigger each year and the importance of it on the tour also increases as it retains a two star status with more prize money and points available for the Open division."
We've just launched our very own range of surfboards (Mini Mal, Classic Nose Rider and Fish) - check them out www.fatface.com/hardware which you'll be able to try at the event.
For would be surf hopefuls, we'll be running surf lessons, so if you fancy a go, come on down!
