I’m thriving after a kidney transplant 2 years ago, thanks to my sister Sally. Currently running Windwise ‘Winds of the World Tour’ taking keen windsurfers to distant locations and showing them how to make the most of their skills. I raced head to head against a Volvo 70 Racing Mono-hull and VX 40 racing Catamaran. The results will be published in Boards Magazine.
Why this sport?
I love its versatility. You can either cruise about on flat water, or seek the most extreme conditions to get a buzz and reward that no other sport can give you.
How did you get into it?
I learnt on the River Thames and was taught by Dee Caldwell who was the world freestyle champion. It’s always useful to have an experienced teacher.
What next?
I’m seeking additional sponsors for a few long distant windsurfing challenges, finishing a book and making the definitive technique DVD.
Any other sports?
I like a real mix, probably in this order, mountain biking, running, canoeing, tennis and sailing.
Favourite event and why?
Long distance events that enable you to travel to distant places by board!
Favourite place in the world?
For windsurfing you can’t get much better than Maui or the West Coast of Ireland. If I’m not windsurfing, I love biking in Spain.
Training regime?
Just written a windsurfing ‘Fitnesswise’ training schedule which includes a mix of cardio, strength, balance and core stability training. Mix that in with a few other sports and you start to get yourself ready for windsurfing. But nothing beats being on the water!
What makes you good at your sport?
My main work in windsurfing is now dedicated to helping others improve their own windsurfing. I’ve used my previous windsurfing and racing experience to be able to diagnose what makes things work on a board. Ultimately there is nothing better than seeing someone improve and enjoy their sport.
Advice to others wanting to get into the sport?
Start now! Get good coaching, improve your level before improving your quiver and don’t be too hard on yourself. Windsurfing always offers new challenges and it’s vital to enjoy the ride.
Married, Single, kids? Tell all!
Married to the gorgeous Karen, we’ve got 3 kids; Indie, Harry and Ella. We travel together and Karen photographs all the windsurfing action for numerous magazines around the world. I’m a lucky man with a great life.
