What do I need to get started in the sport?

Where can I learn?

The BBSKA will send you on trips to Europe to learn sliding but you can pop down to Bath University and try our push start to test your sprint speed.

What equipment do I need to start me off?

As long as you've got some sprint spikes, ski helmet and some pads, then they’ll do the rest!!

Where can I get the kit from?

Try skeletonsport.com for the more specialist kit but any local sport shop could have sprint spikes. The sleds and runners are a little more difficult to get hold of, but to begin with the BBSKA will help you out with that.

Good places in the UK to try out the sport

Although there isn’t an ice track in the UK, there is a push start track in Bath and if you fancy a go, give the BBSKA a call on contacts above.

Is there a basic fitness level required at entry level?

A top level sprinter who loves speed! For example a 16-18 year old male running 3.90secs for the 30m sprint. If you get in touch with the BBSKA you’ll probably have to do a ‘push start test’, if you get through that you’re in with a chance. From then on, it’s about wit, controlling your mind and determination to never give in!

Any big events we should know about?

Olympic Winter Games in Turin 2006 was the most recent, and 4 years down the line there will be another...Vancouver 2010. That’s the one Fat Face Team Rider Grek Kirk will be aiming for! Aside from that there are the World Cups, European Cups, World and European Championships, plus World Student Games and World Junior Champs.
