Olympic Tornado sailing and Volvo Extreme 40 sailor and F18 Catamaran sailor
Battleground
I love competing in Sydney, it’s got ideal conditions for sailing and it’s generally a good place to spend some time. Back home, I love the sailing around Weymouth.

Why this sport?
How many other sports do you get to speed along at 30 mph without an engine and only hearing the sound of the waves crashing across the deck? It’s amazing, why wouldn’t I be doing it? Why aren’t you?
How did you get into it?
My dad put me in a boat when I was about 1 year old and then bought me my first boat aged 6 years. He was always an optimist, looks like it might be paying off though!
What next?
I’d love to get involved in the Volvo Ocean Race or the Americas Cup. Both of those would be an experience of a lifetime.
Any other sports?
Fitness training, circuits, cycling, running, a bit of 5 a side football when I can, skiing, snow boarding, windsurfing and surfing. Oh yeah… I am going to learn to kite surf this year as well.
Favourite event and why?
1720 Europeans in Lake Garda Italy 2005, great sailing, awesome venue, good fun sailors and lots of socials.
Favourite place in the world?
Lake Garda Italy, it has great windsurfing, sailing, mountain biking and skiing in the winter.
Training regime?
Something aerobic most days and on the water training as much as physically possible, I live in the UK so the weather can sometimes get in the way.
What makes you good at your sport?
Natural talent teamed with a commitment and determination to win.
Advice to others wanting to get into the sport?
It’s a real thrill flashing through or above the water with spray everywhere, go and have a go at your local sailing club, or contact the Royal Yachting Association for details of a training establishment near your home.

What’s the hairiest situation you’ve found yourself in and how did you dig yourself out of it?
I capsized off Hayling Island on the South Coast of England. I was getting swept offshore with the mast in 3 bits and a crew who got separated form the boat. I managed to get help from a rescue boat (always one out when club racing) and they towed us back in.
Who do you most admire in your sport?
Russell Coutts who has won Olympic medals and 3 Americas cups
Tell me something random
Sailing and racing my catamaran is like flying just above the water at break neck speeds, as much fun as you can have with your pants on!
What are your goals?
To win a Gold medal at the next Olympic Games, you have to aim high!
