Why this sport?
For the adventure first and the action second. I find white water kayaking not only challenging and exhilarating but it’s also a great way to explore new places.
How did you get into it?
Accidentally, but I'm glad I did! Kayaking just sort of happened to me because my elder sister went. I originally wanted to be a climber but I’ll never stop kayaking now.
What next?
Exploring the rivers of the world. This spring I’ll be catching the melt water in the Swiss and Italian Alps, then later this year I am gonna be part of a team heading to the Himalayas. Then I’m off to New Zealand. I also hope to have time to do a little more climbing! Looks like it’s gonna be a good year!
Any other sports?
I like summer or winter climbing, otherwise I love to surf and I’ve been trying a bit of snowboarding.
Favourite event and why?
Bremgarten ‘Wave n Wheels’ in Switzerland because it’s so much more than just kayaking, there were great parties and the whole town became a huge skate park for the week. Or the Sjoa Boater Cross in Norway, because it’s some of the toughest racing ever. You race head to head against three other racers down huge rapids!
Favourite place in the world?
I’m still looking, but for the moment any river bank in the mountains and sunshine. Italy in spring, Norway in summer and Africa in the winter are at the top of the list so far.
Training regime?
Spending as many days on the water as possible. Oh… and eating good food.
What makes you good at your sport?
Taking my gymnastics background to the water and enjoying myself, I try not to take it too seriously. Having a variety of techniques also helps my paddling. I like to freestyle as well as run steep rivers.
Advice to others wanting to get into the sport?
Get expert tuition, be determined, paddle whenever you can, stay safe and above all do it for fun.
