Fat Face Pier2Pier
26/05/06 5:20PM
The Fat Face supported Volvo Extreme 40 Basilica laid down a time of 9.11 minutes over the 1.1 mile course between the piers off Southsea seafront yesterday.
As the Official Shore Kit Supplier for the VX40 Basilica which is competing in the Volvo Ocean Race, in-port races, Fat Face laid-down a speed challenge to some of their other water born team riders in a Pier2Pier race off Southsea Seafront to see just how quick this boat really is.
Urged on by their competitive nature, four other Team Riders rose to the challenge and met the race organisers at the hub of the Volvo activity in Gunwharf Quays in Portsmouth.
At about midday, the Fat Face Team Riders headed out identifiable by their Team rash vests to put the VX40 to the test. After a week of howling wind and driving rain, the VX40 and 18ft skiff sailors enjoyed the bright sunshine and light winds. Being very lightweight boats with vast sail areas the VX40 and 18ft Skiff competed head to head from Pier to pier with the VX40 crossing the finish line only a few metres in front of the 18ft Skiff.
However, the light winds were not ideal for the other Fat Face Team Riders John Hibbard and Simon Bornhoft (windsurfing) and Chris Bull (Kitesurfing) who had hoped to beat Basilica in the Pier2Pier challenge. Nevertheless, despite struggling in the light airs and in true Fat Face fashion they managed to entertain themselves by other means…
Not willing to let a little thing like no wind prevent him from competing, John Hibbard (windsurfing) managed to fly the course in what would have been the winning time (but for the fuel issue from his RIB assistance!!)
And Chris Bull’s top kitesurfing tip from the day was: “if you ever find there is not enough wind to launch a kite, just find yourself a VX40 and its crew, slap your kiteboard on your feet and enjoy wakeboarding with extreme lift and no petrol fumes!!” – Check out this awsome clip from Sail TV!!
All in all, despite the lack of wind for some, this unique event was a fantastic success. It was quite a spectacle for passers by to see the Skiff, VX40 and towed Windsurfer go head to head close to the shore and it was certainly a crack for all the riders involved.
Big thanks goes to Harvey Hillary and his megaphone for coordinating the event on the water.
So, what next? Well, if you fancy rising to the challenge, watch this space for details on next years Fat Face Pier 2 Pier which will be open to all windpowered vessels to put down their best time over a period of one weekend.
