THE venue for the summer solstice weekend was definitely Lusty Glaze in Newquay, as Fat Face once again took over the beach with Night Surf 2007, the second leg of the British Pro Surf Tour.
Despite rain everywhere else in the country, thousands of friends, families and party goers were soaking up the sun as surfers from around the world descended on Newquay to compete in the Longboard, Women’s and Men’s Open events.
Small swell tested the competitors’ performance, but our very own Team Rider and Newquay favourite Chris Thomson took first place in the Longboard competition. Holly Donnelly, also from Newquay won the women’s final to then take the podium for a second time by coming second in the U16 Girls the following day.
UK Pro Russ Winter battled it out with Australian rider Jarrad Sulliven for the Night Surf Men’s Open title. In the dark and with only spot lights to illuminate the water, Jarrad took victory and first place as well as a Fat Face cheque worth £1,250.
A jam-packed Grommets Tour kicked off on the Sunday, where the U12s and the U16s Girls and Boys events took place. Newquay based grom Harry Timson showed off his skills on the water to maintain his title as U12 winner and to uphold his leadership of the tour for the second year running. Gwen Spurlock brought the trophy home in the U16 Girls event with Stuart Campbell pipping Tom Good, Toby Donachie and Lewis Clinton to be crowned U16’s Boys Champion.
The weekend was a massive success with the cherry on the cake being a fantastic air display from the Red Arrows, where crowds lined the cliff tops for the best seat in the house. Live band Ammunition had the whole beach on their feet as an incredible firework display brought Saturday night’s Prize giving to a close.
It’s been an awesome start to the 2007 Fat Face Night Series and with 4 events still to go, this year is hotting up to be the best yet.
