Fat Face

You know how it is. You get out on the snow and you'll do anything to avoid looking like a duck on a frozen pond. So impress your mates by nailing a rail. Remember, before you start, always run your hand or ski down to feel for rough patches or burrs, and check your approach speed with a dummy run.

1. Approach in a poised, low stance, then use the lip of the jump, coupled with a strong vertical pop, to get you airborne. Tuck and twist your skis to 90 degrees in the direction of travel.

2. Land with flat bases centred over the rail, and with your skis angled to match the downslope off the rail. As you're landing on a sloping rail you should expect to speed up.

3. Once on the rail, try to remain in that solid, low position, so you look composed and relaxed.

4. For added style, think about pushing your hands down towards your boots in an ape like stance.

5. As you approach the end of the rail, make a slight vertical pop. This will help you clear it and give you a fraction longer to reposition your skis down the slope.

6. On landing, push into your shins to absorb the impact. As always, try to keep your weight forward.
